Men's Basketball Falls to Rochester in Tournament Championship

Utica, NY - The Utica College men's basketball team fell to Rochester in the University of Rochester Tournament championship Sunday afternoon by a final score of 69-58.

Utica set the tone early on in this one, working a 10-6 advantage at the 13:02 mark. Junior center Kimedrick Murphy (Hudson, NY/Hudson) led the offensive charge, accounting for six of the Pioneers' first 10 points.

Rochester, who received 33 votes in last week's national polls, bounced back from the slow start soon after, taking its first lead of the game with 9:28 left to go in the first half, 14-13. The two teams traded baskets for the remainder of the half and went into the locker room tied at 28.

The second half was even all the way up until the 4:55 mark, where the Yellow Jackets netted six unanswered points to take a 59-53 lead that they would hold and build on for the rest of the contest.

Sophomore guard Darius Hopkins (Tampa, FL/Seffner Christian) continued an already stellar tournament performance, as he finished the night with a team-high 17 points and three assists. He netted a team-high 20 points in the opening round against Neumann Saturday night.

Murphy was the only other Pioneer to finish scoring in double digits, totaling 13 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. This marked the first double-double of the season for the 6-foot-8 center.

Senior forward Hunter Remley (Cranford, NJ/Cranford) added nine points on three 3-pointers in the effort while freshman forward Thomas Morreale (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) matched him with nine points and added eight rebounds.

The Pioneers drop to 4-2 with this loss, and they will return home Wednesday for a non-conference matchup against Morrisville State at 7 p.m.
