Delhi Claims Rematch Against Utica

Box Score DELHI, NY - The Utica College volleyball team fell on the road to SUNY Delhi on Wednesday night, 3-0. 
 
The Broncos took the first set 25-21, the second set 25-16 and the third set 25-21. Delhi led the entire first set from wire to wire however, the Pioneers kept things interesting as the team came back from a 20-15 deficit to trail by one at 21-20. Both sides committed four errors in the set however, UC was still outhit by Delhi .244 to .143 en route to the set loss. 
 
Utica started the second set ahead 3-1 thanks to a Lainey Hayden (Owensboro, KY/Owensboro) kill, a Madison Maggiore (Orangeburg, NY/Tappan Zee) ace and a Brooke Taverne (Westmoreland, NY/Westmoreland) kill. The Broncos took control from that point on as for the set they outhit the Pioneers .278 to -0.061 while committing one error to UC's seven. The teams opened the third set trading points to begin deadlocked at five. Delhi took the next two before Utica answered back with three straights on kills by Eleanor Cepiel (West Sand Lake, NY/Academy of Holy Names) and Julyanna Sauschuck (Huguenot, NY/Port Jervis) and an ace by Krystell Pappas (Owensboro, KY/Owensboro)
 
Now trailing 13-11, Kurstan Martin (Owego, NY/Tioga) recorded a kill and Peyton Migliaccio (Suffern, NY/Suffern) served an ace to even the score at 13. Later with the set tied at 17, Delhi took the next four points to lead 21-17. A service error and an attack error followed by a Pappas ace drew the Pioneers within one again, 21-20. The teams traded the next two points before the Broncos eventually took the set to complete the sweep. 
 
Cepiel led Utica with 12 kills, Sauschuck recorded five while Martin and Taverne each finished the game with three. Hannah Johnson (Murfreesboro, TN/Blackman) ended the game with 13 assists for the Pioneers, Pappas finished as the team leader with 13 digs while Taverne (two) and Martin (one) had the only blocks on the team. Maggiore played a balanced match, ending the night second on the team with eight assists and third with 10 digs.
 
UC (7-17, 2-6 Empire 8) will play its final game of the season at 7 p.m. on Friday, October 29 at Cazenovia.
