Swim & Dive Returns From Break With a Pair of Weekend Meets

UTICA, NY - The Utica College men's and women's swim & dive teams are set to compete for the first time in over a month this weekend. The teams will travel to Alfred University at 1 p.m. on Friday as they take on the Saxons before hosting Alfred State College and Nazareth College at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

Last Time Out: The Utica College men's swim & dive team split its tri-meet on November 20 against Roberts Wesleyan and Wells College. The men fell to Roberts Wesleyan, 125-66, and beat Wells, 103-49. Jackson Sorbello finished with a pair of wins on the men's side. The team's preseason swimmer to watch touched the wall first in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 58.39 while later winning the 50-yard butterfly in 26.36, just .12 seconds ahead of second place. Coleman Barry also had two wins on the afternoon, taking the 200-yard freestyle in 2:02.17 and the 100-yard backstroke in 1:03.83. The women's team traveled to Cazenovia College on December 6 and came home with an 89-54 win over the Wildcats. The Pioneers ended the meet with six wins as a team while four different members of the team took home individual wins in five different events. Katie Delgado (Greene, NY/Broome CCC) won two events, touching the wall first in the 100-yard freestyle in 1:03.11 as well as the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:25.37. Delgado, along with Amelia Laible (Oakdale, NY/Connetquot), Kelly Waryncia (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) and Sara Kuiken (Valley Falls, NY/Tamarack), helped win the 200-yard medley relay as the tandem finished in 2:12.73. Madison West (Malone, NY/Franklin Academy ) claimed the 200-yard freestyle (2:21.67) in the fifth event and in the ninth event and Bailey Simmons (Vernon Center, NY/Vernon-Verona-Sherrill ) won the 100-yard individual medley in 1:13.39. UC also went on to take the top-two spots in the 100-yard butterfly with Waryncia coming in first (1:13.71) and Seaman second (1:14.29). Other finishers include Laible second in the 50-yard freestyle in 29.19, less than one second off of first, and West finishing second in the 100-yard backstroke just .75 seconds behind first. 
 
Home Sweet Home: The Pioneers will take to the Utica College Pool for the first time since November 20. The team's will also have one more home meet after this weekend. 
 
About Alfred: The men's team is 2-4 this season after coming off of a 132-89 loss to Le Moyne College on Tuesday while the women are 1-4-1 and also coming off a loss to Le Moyne. For the men, its medley relay team of Phillip Volaski, Justin Jarmer, Emiliano Terrazas and Andrew Yates beat Le Moyne with a time of 1:42.93 while Terrazas also took home a win in the 200-yard IM. Victoria Cramp also broke her own school record last time out on the women's side with a score of 232.40 for six-dives on the 1-meter. 
 
A Look at Alfred State: The women's team is currently 4-2 coming off of a 7th place finish at the Oberlin Invitational while the men enter the weekend 5-0 after a 1st place finish at the same event. Six different swimmers on the men's side currently hold Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference top times in numerous events while a handful of the women swimmers are within the top-three in the AMCC in season top times. This will be the first meeting all-time between the women's teams and the second all-time meeting between the men's teams with the first coming in 2014 resulting in a Utica win. 
 
Scouting Nazareth: The men's team is currently 1-4 this season and the women are currently 2-3 heading into Friday's meet against Le Moyne. In the Bomber Invitational hosted by Ithaca College from December 3-5, the women finished in 5th place and the men's team finished 8th out of the 10-team field. Taylor Robey of the women's team nearly broke her own school record last time out with a 100-yard freestyle time of 51.48. 

Up Next: Both teams will host Herkimer Community College at 6 p.m. on January 21 from the Utica College Pool.
