CORTLAND STUNS UC WOMEN'S HOCKEY

The Utica College women's hockey team was defeated 5-2 Friday night in a ECAC Women's West Conference contest at SUNY Cortland. Senior Meagan Sudik (West Bend, WI/Wisconsin Wild) netted her fourth goal of the season for UC.

The Pioneers fall to 7-5 on the season and 5-5 in conference play, while the Red Dragons get their first victory, improving to 1-6-2 including a conference record of 1-5-2.

Cortland broke the ice at 16:11 in the first period to take a 1-0 lead. Just under four minutes later, at 19:11, Sudik would tie the game, 1-1, on a power-play.

The Red Dragons would retake the lead at 4:05 in the second period on an even strength goal by Cortland's leading scorer, Gina Tomei. UC would answer 33 seconds later when Nicole Joslyn (Whitesboro, NY/Rochester Edge (NY)) netted her first goal of the season and knotted the contest up at 2-2. Red Dragon Allie Beall would connect on the game winner at 9:13.

In the third period, Cortland would score two empty netters at 18:52 and 19:54 to seal the victory
Both squads went 1-for-3 on power plays and each had three penalties totaling six minutes. UC outshot the home team 37-17.

Utica goalies Jen Hamel (Ithaca, NY/Northwood School) and Marissa Hotaling (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) combined for 12 saves.

The Pioneers return to the ice Jan. 7as they travel to Purchase, NY to challenge Manhattanville College in a non-conference. Faceoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
