Box Score

Cortland, NY (11/17/12)- Senior Carmen Johnson (Falls Church, VA/Washington Pride) of the Utica College women's hockey team netted the game winner with 52 seconds remaining in overtime to lift the Pioneers to a 3-2 win over SUNY Cortland and their first sweep of the season, Saturday.

Cortland opened the scoring with just under five minutes left in the first period to put the Red Dragons on top 1-0.  Senior Maggie Giamo netted her first of the season as she was able to burry a rebound off of junior Gina Tomei's shot.

Utica evened the score at 1:55 of the second period as sophomore Kelsey Dowdall (Smiths Falls, ONT/Nepean) got her first of the season off assists from senior Meghan McMahon (Gardner, MA/St. Marks (MA)) and sophomore Courtney May (Oxford, MI/Belle Tire)

The Pioneers scored the go-ahead just over six minutes into the third period as freshman Morgan Reed (Fort Myers, FL/Cushing Academy) tallied her third of the season on a one-timer from sophomore Nicole Schwartz (Danville, CA/San Jose Sharks).  McMahon also assisted on the play.

Just a minute later, on the power play, Cortland had a stroke of luck as a shot from Abbie Adams hit off a Pioneer in front of the net and went in to tie the game.

Utica controlled the play through most of the overtime period before Johnson was able to knock home her third goal of the season and second of the weekend to seal the victory for the Pioneers.

Cortland drops to 0-6 overall and 0-4 in the ECAC West, while Utica improves to 3-3 on the season.

Junior Goaltender Jennifer Hamel (Ithaca, NY/Northwood School) made 16 saves for UC, while Deanna Meunier had 36 stops for Cortland.

The Pioneers return to action after the Thanksgiving break as they host Williams College on Friday, Nov. 30.  The non-conference game is scheduled for 7 p.m.
