ROME, NY -- The Cazenovia College baseball team scored seven late runs to earn a 13-5 victory over Utica College on Thursday at Delutis Field #2.
Utica jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the top of the second.
Bryce Patterson (Corning, NY/Corning East) singled, bringing home
Andrew Hobika, Jr. (Clinton, NY/Clinton) after a double by Hobika, Jr. got things started. The scoreboard lit up again for the Pioneers when Patterson scored on an RBI single by
Jerred Beniquez (Port Ewen, NY/Kingston),
Benjamin Hobaica (Clinton, NY/Clinton) scored on a wild pitch, and
Daniel Priore (Utica, NY/T.R. Proctor) scored on a fielder's choice.
Cazenovia brought home two runs in the third inning to make it a 4-2 ballgame. The Wildcats scored on a two-run home run by Dan Hodne, plating Brent Baker.
The game's last lead went to Cazenovia College thanks to a fourth inning rally that saw three runs cross the plate on a two-run double by Baker and an error, making the score 5-4 in the bottom of the fourt.
Cazenovia College tacked on another five runs in the seventh. Baker started the inning with a single, scoring Ryan Meyer.
One run in the top of the ninth helped UC close its deficit to 13-5. An RBI single by
Eric Rightmier (Marcy, NY/Whitesboro) set off the Utica rally. Finally, Cazenovia's Dan Colburn got Beniquez to strike out to end the game.
Jake Hill recorded the win on the mound for the Wildcats. He allowed four runs over 4 1/3 innings. Hill struck out four, walked one and gave up six hits.
Cazenovia College (10-11) was sparked by Hoche and Baker, who teamed up for nine hits and seven RBIs.
William Winsman (Palatine Bridge, NY/Canajoharie) took the loss for the Pioneers. He allowed six runs in 4 2/3 innings, walked one and struck out three.
Beniquez went 2-for-6 on the day with one RBI, while
Brandon Thomas (West Winfield, NY/Mount Markham) and Hobika each added a 2-for-5 day at the plate.
Bryce Patterson (Corning, NY/Corning East) went 1-for-5 with two runs scored and one RBI while Rightmier came off the bench and went 2-for-2 at the plate with one RBI.Â
Benjamin Hobaica (Clinton, NY/Clinton) was 1-for-2 with one run scored and one walk for Utica. Priore also tacked on one hit and one run scored.
The Pioneers (12-8) return home on Saturday when they host Ithaca College for an Empire 8 doubleheader that begins at 1 p.m
