Box Score 2 CANTON, NY – The Utica College baseball team swept a doubleheader at SUNY Canton Thursday afternoon taking game one 15-11 and winning game two 4-2.
Brandon Thomas (West Winfield, NY/Mount Markham) led the UC offense going 5-for-8 with six RBI and four runs scored.
The Pioneers improve to 15-11 and are right back in action Friday as they welcome Houghton College to the UC Baseball Field for game one of a three-game set. First pitch on Friday is set for 4 p.m.
The Kangaroos fall to 9-24 on the season and remain home this weekend as they greet Alfred State for three games on Saturday and Sunday.
Utica 15, Canton 11 – Game One FinalThe home team opened up the scoring with three runs over its first two at bats and led 3-0 after two innings of play. Canton scored two runs in the first on three hits and added another run in the second on two base knocks.
The Pioneers answered in the top of third as they batted around the order scoring seven runs on three hits and the help of two walks and two Canton errors.
Brandon Thomas (West Winfield, NY/Mount Markham) and
Benjamin Hobaica (Clinton, NY/Clinton) each had drove in two runs with RBI singles giving UC a 7-3 lead.
The Roos used a five run fifth to retake the lead, 11-7, on five hits including a two-run double. However, the Pioneers responded with five scores of their own in the top of the sixth with three hits and one Canton error. UC used back-to-back doubles to regain the lead, 12-11. Thomas and catcher
Thomas Dinnen (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Walter Panas ) each smacked two-run doubles.
UC put up three insurance runs in the seventh as it posted its 14
th win of the season, eclipsing the most wins in a season in nine years.
Thomas registered five RBI going 3-for-5 while
Jake Ryan (Kingston, NY/Kingston) went 2-for-4 with two doubles and three runs scored in the game one victory.
Utica 4, Canton 2 – Game Two FinalThe Pioneers scored three runs in the first inning of game two and never looked backed as they improved to 15-11 on the season. UC's
Ethan Bliss (Cooperstown, NY /Cooperstown) got the win with 5.2 innings of work striking out four while allowing just two runs.
Matthew DeMartino (Oceanside, NY/Oceanside) led the offense going 3-for-4 with four RBI while Patterson and
Ryan Watson (Deerfield, NY/Whitesboro) each chipped in with two hits in the game two victory.
