Utica Drops Heartbreaker to Medaille in E8 Championship

Box Score BUFFALO, NY - The Utica University men's soccer team fell in a heartbreaker to the Medaille University Mavericks 3-2 in double overtime in the Empire 8 Championship game on Saturday night.

The Pioneers held a 4-2 shot advantage through the 14th minute before Medaille struck first. At the 15:27 mark, Soloman Konesky scored on a scramble out in front of goal off a Mavericks corner kick for a 1-0 advantage.

However, Kamer Lenio (Brighton, NY/Brighton) responded five minutes later with what was his first goal of the season to tie the game. Later in the 42nd minute, one of the top goal scorers, Ander Castillo, regained the lead for Medaille on the team's fourth attempt of the half for a 2-1 lead after one full.

On the Pioneers' third attempt of the second half, Byamungu Mugushu (Syracuse, NY/Bishop Grimes) evened the score at 2-2 on an unassisted goal in the 60th minute. As the teams battled back-and-forth over the final 30 minutes of play, regulation was not enough as Utica went into its second consecutive overtime game.

In the first extra frame, Medaille outshot the Pioneers 4-0, including the final two coming deep within the box over the final six seconds, but nothing came of them as a second overtime approached.

Less than a minute into the second overtime, Medaille fired off a shot that was saved by Foti Xidias (Carteret, NJ/Carteret) while Eric Metade of the Mavericks came crashing in to collect the rebound and score the go-ahead goal and eventual game-winner. Utica was denied a shot throughout the remainder of the second overtime as Medaille went on to win the E8 title in thrilling fashion.

Lenio, Mugushu and Brady Maloney (Ellisburg, NY/Bellville Henderson) led the team with three shots each while Noah Nassberg (Naples, FL/Gulf Coast) and Brady Barnard (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) attempted a pair each. Xidias made eight saves in goal.

Utica's season comes to a close after reaching its first Empire 8 championship since the 2013 season.
