UTICA, NY (3-24-14) – Senior Alec Choleva, of the Utica College baseball team, was named the College’s Male Athlete of the Week Monday after his outstanding performance this past week at the Russ Matt Tournament in Winter Haven, FL.
Choleva was one of two players to start all eight games in Florida and currently leads the team in almost all major categories including offense, defense and pitching. At the plate (min 20 AB), he leads the squad with an impressive .920 slugging,.520 on base percentage, runs (13), total bases (23), walks (nine), extra base hits (six), triples (two), homeruns (two) and is second in average (.440).
On the mound, he is 1-1 overall with one complete game, a team-best 9.1 innings pitched and 11 strikeouts with opposing hitters batting a mere. 240. He has only allowed three runs in his 9+ innings of work for a 1.93 ERA, good enough for second in the rotation. He is a perfect 1.000 in the field with 18 catches, 16 putouts and two assists.
The Pioneers wrapped up their spring trip with a 3-5 overall record and are scheduled to return to action Wednesday against Oswego State.
