Utica, NY(9/9/2013)- Senior running back Jake Larson (Bemus Point, NY/Maple Grove) of the Utica College football team was named the College’s Male Athlete of the Week on Monday.
Larson had a big day for UC in his first start since a knee injury kept him out of the lineup for the entire 2012 season. Larson finished the day with 124 yards rushing on 24 carries and two touchdowns to lead UC to a 42-22 win over Lewis & Clark in its season-opener. He now needs 25 yards rushing to become just the fourth running back in school-history to rush for more than 1,000 yards in a career. Larson is now five touchdowns shy of becoming the College's all-time leader in rushing touchdowns.
In 2011, Larson rushed for 851 yards on 167 carries and 11 touchdowns, which earned him Empire 8 Conference second team honors that year. Larson’s 2011 campaign was highlighted by back to back performances of over 150 rushing yards against Hartwick and RPI, as well as a 102 yard, three touchdown performance against Ithaca as the Pioneers defeated the Bombers for the first time in program history.
The Pioneers return to the gridiron this Saturday, Sept. 14, as they host Union College under the lights at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium. Opening kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
