Hall of Fame
Bobbie McMail Simon ‘98 will go down in the record books as one of the most dominating pitchers to ever grace the circle for the Utica College softball program. Simon holds the school-records for career strikeouts (277), fewest walks per 7 innings (0.70) and strikeouts per 7 innings (5.73), while guiding UC to a 36-19 overall record over the course of two seasons under the tutelage of Head Coach Dave Fontaine.
She holds the second-lowest earned run average in program-history and she also holds the second most wins (35), all in just two years and 55 games played. She ranks third all-time with 338.1 innings pitched. She holds the school’s single-season mark for wins with 19 in 1996 and she also broke the single season record for strike outs with 157 in 1997. She ranks second on the single season list with 190.1 innings pitched in 1997 and third on the single season list with an ERA of 2.30 in 1996. In 1996, she ranked 23rd nationally with an average of 5.3 strikeouts per seven innings.
As a senior she was named the College’s Dick Miller Award winner as the top female athlete at UC and she also garnered the Kiwanis Student-Athlete Award for her achievements on the diamond and in the classroom. She was a New York State Women’s College Athletic Association All-State selection and a National Fastpitch Coaches Association Academic All-American.
The entire program has only won 19 games in a single-season on three occasions – McMail pitched her way to 19 wins on the mound in 1996. 19 wins in ‘96 was tied for 15th in the country and Utica’s winning percentage of 0.741 in 1996 ranked 25th in the nation.
This honor marks the third time Simon has been inducted into a Hall of Fame for her athletic accomplishments. In December of 2011 she was inducted into the New York State Chemung County Sports Hall of Fame. She is also a member of the Notre Dame High School Athletic Hall of Fame in Elmira, NY – an honor she received in 1998. She was a three sport star at Notre Dame as a member of the soccer, basketball and softball teams. Her impressive list of high school accomplishments was capped by First Team All-State honors on the softball diamond.
Simon has worked in the field of occupational therapy for the past 15 years after graduating from UC with honors. She is currently working at Tampa General Hospital in Tampa, Florida as the Coordinator for Cardiac and Transplant Acute Rehabilitation Services. She has worked for Tampa General for over nine years.
Simon graduated from Utica College in 1998 with a degree in Occupational Therapy (Summa Cum Laude). She currently resides in Tampa, Florida with her husband Todd (originally from Whitesboro, NY) and children Avery and Morgan. She is the daughter of Bruce and Sharon McMail.
