A well-known author, editor, media executive and pundit, Larry Platt is the co-author of Just Tell Me I Can't: How Jamie Moyer Defied the Radar Gun and Defeated Time; and Everyday I Fight, the posthumous memoir from Stuart Scott.
Platt is a former columnist for the Philadelphia Inquirer and former editor of the Philadelphia Daily News and Philadelphia magazine. Under Platt, the magazine received its first back-to-back nominations for the much-coveted National Magazine Award in General Excellence and was named the nation's third-best newsstand performer by Capell's Circulation Report. Currently, Platt is the co-founder and editor of The Philadelphia Citizen, a nonprofit media organization dedicated to using solutions-based journalism to reignite civic participation.
Platt graduated from Utica College with a degree in Journalism and also served as the sports information director when the athletic program was Division I. He was heavily involved with the College's student newspaper, The Tangerine, and he was an influential student in the journalism department. Â Â One of his many great accomplishments included obtaining national publicity for the College after fellow Pioneer Hall of Famer Keith Walker shot 71.3% (154-for-215) from the floor and led the nation for the men's basketball program.
From the Raymond Simon Institute, he received the prestigious Raymond Simon Scholarship and was named an Outstanding PR/Journalism alumnus. His photo hangs on campus in the Simon-Baker classroom, Room 106 Hubbard Hall.
Larry has been a generous and intellectually stimulating guest many times in public relations and journalism classes, as well on class visits to Philadelphia. What many people don't know is that Larry often takes phone calls and visits from UC students seeking career advice. He is a kind but candid mentor to the College's students.
Platt, a native Philadelphian and avid tennis player, has appeared on numerous television shows, including Nightline, ESPN Outside the Lines, and HBO Real Sports.
