Doug Herring will go down as one of the most dynamic men's basketball players to ever step foot on the hardwood at Utica College. A 6-foot-3 guard from Poughkeepsie, NY, Herring played for Utica College from 2005-2009 and averaged 14.8 points, 4.2 rebounds, 4.2 assists, and 1.7 steals per game throughout his collegiate career.  He ranks in the top 10 all-time at UC in points, assists, field goals, 3-pointers made, free throws made, defensive rebounds, steals, games played and minutes making him statistically one of the top players in program-history.

His individual accolades did not tell the entire story, as Herring guided the Pioneers to 75 wins and three Empire 8 Conference Tournament appearances, including two championship game appearances.  As a freshman guard he helped guide the 2005-06 Pioneers to an at-large bid into the NCAA Division III Tournament, where they advanced as far as the "Sweet 16" after downing Gordon College and Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) in the first two rounds. The Pioneers capped the year with a school-record 23 victories and the program's first-ever bid into the NCAA Tournament.

He finished his career ranked first on the College's all-time list with 451 assists and second all-time in career scoring with 1,587 points. His 570 career field goals rank second all-time at UC and he ranks third all-time with 171 career 3-point field goals made. He also ranks third all-time at UC with 276 career free throws made and ninth all-time with 327 career rebounds.  He is the only player in program-history to record over 100 assists in four consecutive seasons.

Herring was a three-time Empire 8 All-Conference First Team selection, earning the honor in each of his sophomore, junior and senior seasons. In his senior season he was the College's Dick Miller Most Inspirational Award winner as the top student-athlete.

Following college, Herring signed with the Hudson Valley Kingz of the Atlantic Coast Professional Basketball League (ACPBL). In his career with the Kingz, he averaged 31.0 points per game. On August 20, 2013, Herring signed a professional contract with the Saint John Mill Rats of the National Basketball League of Canada (NBL). Through 42 games, Herring averaged 17.6 points, 5.1 rebounds, 5.2 assists, and 1.7 steals and shot .426 from the three-point line. He was named an NBL Canada All-Star for the Atlantic Division. Following the season, Herring signed with the Rochester Razorsharks of the Premier Basketball League (PBL), playing four games and averaging 9.8 points, 1.8 rebounds, 2.8 assists, and lifting them to the 2014 PBL championship.

On July 24, 2014, Herring signed with the Bristol Flyers of the British Basketball League (BBL). In 11 games, he averaged 17.7 points, 4.0 rebounds, 4.1 assists, and 1.8 steals. The Flyers made it to the semifinals of the BBL Cup. However, he suffered a season-ending injury with a meniscal tear. On October 19, 2015, Herring returned to the Mill Rats, of the NBL where he is currently over 16 points and six assists per game.

Herring graduated from Utica College in 2009 with a degree in management.
